USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) was a Casablanca-class escort carrier. She was originally to have been given to the Royal Navy under the terms of Lend-Lease as HMS Ameer, but was appropriated by the U.S. Navy while still being built. Liscome Bay was launched on 19 April 1943 and assigned the hull classification symbol CVE-56 on 15 July 1943. On 23 November, the Japanese submarine I-175 arrived off. The LiscomeBay sank in 23 minutes with an explosion so intense, the stern vaporized, showering flesh and debris onto the battleship USS New Mexico (BB 40) which was a mile away. Doris Miller (offsite link) was a brave fighter on the USS West Virginia (BB 48) in Pearl Harbor. He afterwards served on the LiscomeBay and died when it was sunk
